THE DEVOTION COLLECTION
An Artists’s journey to create in harmony with nature, connection, and self.
———
The devotion of the artist is housed in the relationship between the person and their act of creation — the product of which is the love story we call the artist’s journey. This creation is born in response to the natural, physical world. Existing on this earth is an endless sensory experience; we take those bits and pieces of our noticing and channel them into something expressed and shared.
As with many artists, I express with the materials of Nature itself. I use a byproduct of my food in combination with stones, metals, and glass. To devote myself to this creation is to harmonize with the natural world and allow the materials to shift from something dormant to something undoubtedly full of story telling. I’m self taught in my methods, and a massive component of my work is the allowance of the natural elements to become what they choose to become. Throughout my own journey there are waves, questions, and dead ends, but in devoting myself to their becoming I land in places of clarity — and this state of raw harmony is when I feel most loved by my creation in return. Thus the love story builds.
Beyond the natural sensory observations, we also pull from our shared existence. To evolve as a human within community is to also notice these shared lived experiences. The story inside each art piece is partially its own, and yet a part of our shared humanness. Its story doesn’t come alive until it is heard, witnessed, received. The beautiful bit is that this story can bend, shift, and evolve as different people with different eyes come across it. My creations are not meant to be stagnant; the ways in which they are received are the variables that give them true meaning. The art and the way it is experienced is a reciprocal relationship. It’s the overlooked catalyst to the moment of completion and connection that makes that exact creation real.
And this entire process is reflected right back to me. I fall more in tune with myself as flow with the life of the art. I come back home to myself. Through the anticipation, enthusiasm, exhaustion, vulnerability, and letting go, I remain devoted to the creation’s journey and to my own. I exist inside all edges, rolls, and curves of my own body, and am unshakably present in the moment.
I stand alongside my community and witness the art become itself.
I fall in love with the whole of it all.
Here is my newest act of Devotion. I hope you can feel it..
